Shakespeare’s language can feel overwhelming when you don’t have to tools to decode and understand what it means. In this workshop, we’ll cover basic scansion (poetic rhythm) and punctuation to give you the tools to explore Shakesperean text. Through marching out the rhythms and using the “Map of Language” you’ll use your body to explore the text, and connect with it viscerally and intellectually.

This workshop is great for actors interested in deepening their understanding of Shakespeare’s text, as well as for contemporary and musical theatre performers who can benefit from the poetry and phrasing techniques we’ll explore.

This workshop is for students ages 13+

Accessibility

This workshop includes marching and walking to physicalize the text. It can be adapted for those with mobility needs.

This workshop involves reading Shakespeare’s words out loud. Participants will receive the text we’ll work on ahead of time if they would like to familiarize themselves with it before, or they can cold read on the day—no one is working towards “performance level” but volunteers will be asked to share parts of the text out loud individually for the group.

If time allows, we may have participants workshop prepared Shakespeare monologues of their choosing. This will be dependent on the number of people in the class, and interest in sharing prepared material.
